60k of the total subscriber base is actually a lot, because you got to factor in timezones, casual players. so the really interesting number would be ... how many player are online over the course of 24hours.
and you can find lots and lots of postings why people dislike adding grind for SP and why most people consider the passive training a feature. (I wouldnt play any MMO where i would need to grind for my SP)
but that doesnt mean you dont have any advantage from playing the game a lot, because a factor that matters way more than skillpoints: experience.
So if you really want to grind for your SP, eve might not be the game for you.

Quote: Besides, it'll take you months before you can even midly try the PvP in EVE, and sometimes at great cost.
And thats the b*ll**** you need to stop telling people ... it takes you not even 2-3 hours and you can fly a frigate, use some turrets, use a web and a scram and an after burner. (like this cheap rifter).
and you can already roam with your friends and tackle things, while your mostlikely older friends kill them. And claiming "but they are more important" is wrong aswell. because without your tackle he might have gotten away.
from there you can move on to the "The CCP Challenge"-video. which nicely illustrate that SP doesnt really matter to PVP.
your "you need months of training" is pushing the same wrong image of eve as the "you need to train learning skills first" crap that many older players tell the new starters.
get out of that loop and you will see that you dont need much SP to actually win fights in EVE.
If there is one thing goonies have shown one thing, cheap t1 frigates can matter and even newbies can survive in 0.0.
(same goes for PVE btw: i ran my first lvl4 mission with my friends 1h after joining the game.)

1. there is eve university (there is even some training corp who trains you in piracy, guristas role playing theme. forgot the name. can anyone help?)
2. there is a new pvp tutorial in the new player experience now.
and if you ask around in your start corp chat or rookie chat i am sure people would point you to one of the training corps. and learning that pvp means loosing ships isnt a bad thing. as it will happen even to experienced players.
but even when your first pvp experiences are bad it doesnt make a good argument why grinding ship increase SP. as mostlikely your SP didnt matter much for your loss.
and about getting into PVP ... how long does it take you with a bit mission running to get enough standing for faction warfare? 1-2 months maybe? in that time you will understand game mechanics better and might not be an easy prey anymore. (I mean stuff like approaching ships without taking much damage, learning about your own optimal ranges with different ammo types, how fast you can orbit.)

my first pvp experience was after 5 months. got on a killmail got promptly killed by some other guys on the same gate. but instead of whining about the loss i went to sit out my GCC and got me a new ship, which i lost not much later. :p
oh and i saw those unpatient folks who put lots of money into buying a toon from the character bazarr after playing for 2 weeks. they made nice expensive loss mails afterwards :)
